A Handmade Tale

Music has always been central to life in the Engine studio. It’s a way of understanding rhythm, sequence, and crafting attention to detail. Our founder, Henry, spent years as a DJ, honing an instinct for the act of curation and the decisions that shape how something unfolds. This same way of thinking continues to inform how we approach playlists today.

The playlist matters to us because it’s a deliberate act, one that communicates care through time and attention, rather than convenience. Much like making a mixtape for a friend once did, it requires listening, judgment, and a willingness to shape something unique for someone else. This is the reason we continue to make them by hand, even though algorithms could easily assemble something passable in seconds.

Christmas offers a natural pause, and with it the opportunity to reflect on the year as a whole, rather than a series of disconnected moments. For Engine, the Christmas playlist becomes a narrative arc — a way to trace the peaks and troughs of the past twelve months, but it’s the accompanying poem that gives this reflection its final shape.

The poem is often written and revised far in advance, with careful attention to length, cadence, and omission, until it can hold the contents without becoming exhaustive. It’s a slow and often laborious process, undertaken deliberately, but done so because it allows the quieter moments to sit alongside one another in a way that feels honest and considered.

This year’s playlist, ‘Escape Velocity’, speaks to a shared desire to move beyond difficulty and regain momentum after a period of sustained pressure and uncertainty. While it acknowledges the urge to escape and venture to pastures new, it also carries a sense of perseverance, hope, and effort. The belief that comfort and stability can still be found when we make time to look for them.

The card itself reflects the same commitment to craft that runs through the playlist and poem. We’re grateful to purveyors of printed matter Generation Press for producing the physical card with such care and attention to detail. Each card is signed by hand, not because it’s the most efficient option (indeed, arguably the least), but because these distinctions matter. It is the clearest way, for us, that care is communicated.

We hope you enjoy it, share it, and return to it when the moment feels right.
